A good hardcore book to relax to...and some explination

Since I have been studying Hardcore Punk as a Genre, I thought I knew a lot but it seems that as always there is still more to learn!

I decided to do some reading up when I remembered hearing about a book from a friend called…

American Hardcore

A Tribal History by Steven Blush

...it was also turned into a movie for the Sundance Film festival

As I read the book and read about the lifestyle that I had been living which had grown off the original hardcore punk days in the early ‘80s, and the 80’s seemed like a good time, even though I had plenty of my own fun.

..Anyway I still was blown away by actually reading about the originating of this genre. The book coveres ameriucan hardcore punk bands between the years of 1981-1986 and talks about how they formed the genre to exactly what they wanted to be.

What they wanted…. They wanted this genre to scare those with a faint heart and collect those who feel brushed off by regular society because they feel different or dress differently. This genre was where every 16 year old kid could run and hide when they got picked on, and they would be picked up by others who feel exactly the same way they do… a cast away.

At this point to me hardcore punk as a genre, this is of course based off research that ive done which has kind of moved my mind to a different place then when I started this…..but on to the definition:

HARDCORE PUNK: A mind blowing adventure through violence, chaos, swinging fist, flying spit, and rage against the average everyday society. You have no idea what you will be hit with.

Hardcore Punk, the image collection

These are some bands and just some pictures of what I see when I think of Hardcore Punk as a genre itself

Hardcore Punk…The Image of a genre

When you think of a genre, in my opinion, you sh0uld be able to have a picture pop into your head that visually explains what you think a genre is. When you think of the genre hardcore Punk im sure plenty of interesting thought pictures come into your head… things like

Fighting
Brutality
Fists flying in the air
People screaming along with the music
blood, sweat, spit, absolutely no tears...unless you want to get laughed at that is...
tattoos, peircings
those crazy holes in kids ears
........this could go on forever!

All good clean fun though right?

Of course if it!

Pictures to me explain more than word, but a picture can also give many different meanings to one thing. Especially for a dull subject like a genre its always good to add something to make it exciting like a picture! In the next blog after this one I want to explain Hardcore Punk as a genre in some truly hardcore pictures.

Hardcore Punk, great genre or menace to society

Since a young age i have surounded myself with music, i was introduced in punk rock or hardcore music at the age of thirteen and still at the age of 21 i still love the scene and the atmosphere of this genre, even though many people look down towards " The weird looking kids with big holes in their ears, peircings and covered in those aweful tattos". Thats only because no one understands the true meaning of a family formed by those who are interested in this music. I can go on and on with this subject because of how passionate it makes me, but lets get to the point! I want to specifically look at Hardcore Punk music which is a sub genre of punk music ! There are many books and shows that go into specific musical artists and their lives or more so what a crazy mess their life is. Band such as the Ramones, The Sex Pistols and The Clash made the path for punk rock music. Thats when Hardcore Punk came in with a new aspect of self respect and respect for your friends, Thats where these two genres have a difference Hardcore punk brought the concept of Straightedge to the drugged up drunk punk scene. The band D.O.A which is a Canada based band released their first album called Hardcore 81' which gave the music a name.

Deffinition: is an underground music genre that originated in the late 1970s, following the mainstream success of Punk Rock.Hardcore is generally faster, thicker, and heavier than earlier punk rock. The origin of the term hardcore punk is uncertain.

This genre spread, fast. Places like New York, New Jersey, Boston and California

This underground genre has taken kids off the street and turned them in to good people in society, but that gets thrown off when people judge the tattoos right off the bat, but who would you rather help you in a time of need the crackhead on the corner or the tattooed person who doesnt drink or do drugs?

The look is simply to make a statement that says im here and im different than the rest of you.

This genre of music has been dragged through the mud simply because the intensity of the music, the violence ( or what looks like violence),the crazy looks from people when they see someone tattooed from head to toes, but i know from experience and the experiences of my friends, you brush it off, it doesnt matter what people think of us, we are better off and have closer bonds than most.

These are the bands that explain with their sound what Hardcore Punk Music is:
Wasted Youth
Suicidal Tendancies
Slap Shot
Blood for Blood
Dr. Know
Misfits
Earthcrisis
H2O
Madball
Sick of it All
...and again i could go on and on but those are some the bands that paved the way for the kids today.

Psycological Thrillers...a look at the genre itself

Books have a way of reaching out and grabbing you, Especially with a genre called Psychological thrillers.
Definition:Characters are no longer reliant on physical strength to overcome their brutish enemies (which is often the case in typical action-thrillers), but rather are reliant on their mental resources, whether it be by battling wits with a formidable opponent or by battling for equilibrium in the character's own mind. The suspense
created by psychological thrillers often comes from two or more characters preying upon one another's minds, either by playing deceptive games with the other or by merely trying to demolish the other's mental state.

  • Then I Pulled the two words apart to get another meaning of this genre.
  • Psychological- This word alone concentrates on what is related directly to the mind along with the process of how the mind works, This usually a mental battle rather than a natural physical fight,Also psychological books concentrate on trying to make the reader understand exactly what happend to the character and why they have a war raging in their mind.
  • Thriller- This is usually plot over character, their is usual physical contact among characters, and concentrates on the physical action of the character.
Then when you mix these two genres some of the elements slightly change to really create a psychological thriller that will really grab its readers and make them read at the edge of their seat all the way to the end because they need to know what happend's at the end of the book.

Here are some examples of some Psychological Thrillers!:
  1. Stephen King ( The main man of this genre..in my opinion at least)- Carrie, Thinner, Desperation
  2. Orson Scott Card- Ender's Game
  3. Dennis Lehane- Shutter Island
  4. Thomas Harris- Hannibal
I know when i read a book i want to be excited and i generally want to be intrugued within the first ten pages of the book or i get bored quick and lose interest in the book at all, but everytime i have picked up a psychological thriller i think about the book even when i am not reading and thats why this is such an interesting genre, it makes you think of it without it in front of your face and it truely does reach deep into your mental thinking.
