Psychological thriller vs. Hardcore Punk

Although on the surface these two genres are on completely different ends of the spectrum, plenty of connections can be made if you use your imagination.

That’s exactly what I did, as I have said before images are what make a story happen whether they are mental or visual or little bit of both. I remembered as a child looking through the eye spy books when you would have to find different objects and I thought of how I could put my own twist on it.

I love having to figure something out, a challenge within reading. My idea is to make a journal. (Diary of a Hardcore Killer…my idea for a name) within this journal I want to collage shows from pictures with small clues who could have been killed and how they could have been killed and on the back of the page I will have a hidden compartment explaining the specifics of the story behind the pictures. I will also include some writings from the mysterious killer along with a note that explains that anyone who finds this book has to alone figure out one page of the journal or their fate will be the next page.

……Its different, kind of like a dark comic or zine, below I started to set it up for you guys! Enjoy

…Imagine your standing in a dingy dark venue speakers blaring fists flying in the air. You’re hanging out with your best friends or “Bros” or even “Dudes” when suddenly something doesn’t feel right in the air…there’s the dark feeling of hate brewing. Fights are normal but you knew that there was something deeper, murder was at hand! But who could it be you see the same people every weekend in the same spot, is it someone new or has someone who has been there unexpectedly snapped.

…Even more frightening, what if the went

Home every night and recalled his hate in

A small normal looking journal

Yet the dark secrets within

Are not for the faint hearted.

What may get to you the most is the fact that

Only the slightest clues are given

You have to figure out these dark secrets

Alone.

When you find the book, you mind figure out

The secrets, or you may be the next page.

It’s the book of a Hardcore Killer.

Hardcore Books, Read em,' love em'

In my journey to get to the bottom of Hardcore Punk as a genre of course I did some reading to really get a more in depth look at what others feel this genre means. These are some of the books that I have looked at so far!

Straight Edge: Clean-Living Youth, Hardcore Punk, And Social Change by Ross Haenfler

This book goes in depth about the straight edge part of the hardcore scene. Straight edge simply means you don’t drink, you don’t do drugs, you don’t smoke, and you don’t have promiscuous relations with people, you basically live the cleanest life style…but this movement is also where the violence started among the hardcore scene. It was simply a group of people trying to make their mark and they truly did but not in the best way, they have shown extreme violence especially at shows towards those who do not live the same lifestyle as them, this is how it originally was but in present day straight edge has defiantly strayed away from what it used to be.

Hardcore California: A history of Punk and new wave by Peter Belsito

This book looks at hardcore music in the bigger picture, it talks about all of the elements of a hardcore scene or “Family” and how it started and where it originally came from, this book I have read multiple times and I still find it very interesting.

Touch and Go: The Complete Hardcore Punk Zine ’79-’83 by Tesco Vee

This zine was a lot of fun to look at because it was like looking at pictures from when I was younger and went to shows, it was a great throwback. It was also so awesome to read about the old bands that I did not personally get to experience.

Out Of Vogue: Hardcore Punk Live Shots by Patrick baclet

The pictures in this book are epic and like in my earlier blog… Pictures rule the world and show you a deeper meaning.

…These books were all very interesting and helped me learn more on this subject that I already thought that I knew a lot about which made it really interesting and it defiantly cleared some of the cloudiness of getting to the real meaning of this genre.

Pstchological thriller, as seen by the mind

Psychological Thriller…thrilling the minds eye

What do you see when you think of these words together, what is the image that comes into your mind?

Dark Hallways

Hospital Rooms

Rainy Nights

Knifes

Weapons

Black Masks

…And so on

With a Genre like Psychological Thriller many images of distress and terror should come to your mind, you think of mind bending situations that leave you guessing in shock. But the images can go two ways, personally I think of Crime, then the other thing I think of is Murder. I think of murder because when I think of physiological thrillers I think serial killers and the mind games that they play on their victims and the gruesome ways that the serial killers of the past have killed their victims…

Enough words lets look at some pictures!

A good hardcore book to relax to...and some explination

Since I have been studying Hardcore Punk as a Genre, I thought I knew a lot but it seems that as always there is still more to learn!

I decided to do some reading up when I remembered hearing about a book from a friend called…

American Hardcore

A Tribal History by Steven Blush

...it was also turned into a movie for the Sundance Film festival

As I read the book and read about the lifestyle that I had been living which had grown off the original hardcore punk days in the early ‘80s, and the 80’s seemed like a good time, even though I had plenty of my own fun.

..Anyway I still was blown away by actually reading about the originating of this genre. The book coveres ameriucan hardcore punk bands between the years of 1981-1986 and talks about how they formed the genre to exactly what they wanted to be.

What they wanted…. They wanted this genre to scare those with a faint heart and collect those who feel brushed off by regular society because they feel different or dress differently. This genre was where every 16 year old kid could run and hide when they got picked on, and they would be picked up by others who feel exactly the same way they do… a cast away.

At this point to me hardcore punk as a genre, this is of course based off research that ive done which has kind of moved my mind to a different place then when I started this…..but on to the definition:

HARDCORE PUNK: A mind blowing adventure through violence, chaos, swinging fist, flying spit, and rage against the average everyday society. You have no idea what you will be hit with.

Hardcore Punk, the image collection

These are some bands and just some pictures of what I see when I think of Hardcore Punk as a genre itself
